15 Driving Tricks They Don't Teach in Driving Schools

  • How to eliminate blind spots? How do you know when to stop as you are parallel parking? What should you never do before making a left turn?
Even the most experienced drivers don’t always know all the nuances that can make driving easier. Bright Side explains how to feel at ease when driving, learn to avoid dangerous situations and become a confident driver. Every tip we are going to share is very important, so you’d better not miss any of them.
Get to know your vehicle 0:48
Check if all your mirrors are adjusted correctly 1:45
Don't drive in someone else's blind spot 2:26
Learn to feel where the wheels are 3:13
Park guided by your windows and mirrors 3:51
Learn to drive in bad weather 4:44
Dry your brakes after driving through a puddle 5:30
Watch out for the maneuvers of taller cars in front of you 6:06
If the car doesn’t start, turn the high beams on 6:35
Lower your rear-view mirror at night 7:00
Turn on the air conditioner 7:19
    Use the handbrake regularly 7:34
If a car in the neighboring lane is slowing down, follow suit 7:54
Don’t let the illusion of low speed deceive you 8:12
Don’t turn the wheels beforehand when making a left turn 8:44
    - Believe us, when you hit the roads you will have many things to worry about rather than finding the switches for your front and rear fog lights or your hazard light button. See it as getting ready for an important exam. The more time you take preparing for it and the better you know the material, the less stress you will have during the exam.
    - To eliminate blind spots, adjust your side-view mirrors so that you can’t see your car in them. To check if there is a blind spot, drive past another parked car in reverse, looking in your side-view mirror. As soon as it’s out of the picture, you should see it with your peripheral vision.
    - If you find yourself in a dangerous position, change it. A dangerous position is when you are driving along to the right and slightly behind another vehicle. You are likely to be in their blind spot, so they don’t see you.
    - If you want to avoid potholes on the road, you need to learn to feel where the wheels are. Feeling your vehicle is the key to being able to control it and it is crucially important for safe driving.
    - When perpendicular parking, stop once you see the curb under the side mirror. This way the distance between the car and the curb will be minimal, and you won’t scratch the bumper.
When parallel parking, make sure you don’t scratch the hubcaps. Stick a piece of colored duct tape to the bottom of the windshield.
    - You never know what might happen and when you are going to have to drive in bad weather conditions, so it is better to be prepared. The best thing about practicing is that you can choose the time and place to do it.
    - Before even the smallest of puddles, you’d better slow down and go through it smoothly without maneuvering or changing speed. If you drive quickly, there is a chance of water getting into the ignition system and making the engine stall.
    - Drivers of taller vehicles (truck and buses) see road situations much more clearly. If they start to change lanes all at once, it’s likely that they saw a car accident or a different kind of roadblock.
    - In the times of global climate change, you never know where and when winter might come after you. Sometimes in winter the car just won’t start on the first try. It is not a reason to panic, call for help, or use public transportation instead.
    - To avoid being blinded by a car behind you, change the angle of the mirror by pulling down the lever under it.
    - Even when you don’t use the air conditioner (for example, in winter), turn it on regularly for a short period of time.
    - Even if you don’t do angle parking, use the handbrake regularly to keep it alive. The only exception is very cold weather. In such conditions, you’d better avoid using the handbrake so that the brake pads don’t freeze.
    - If you see a car in the neighboring lane slowing down, you should do the same. It’s likely that the driver wants to let a pedestrian or an animal pass.
    - On a straight road, the speed seems to be two times lower than it really is. It makes you want to speed up to give your vehicle a chance to show its full power.
    - It’s dangerous to turn the wheels in advance before making a left turn. They must be in the initial position. If a car hits you from the back, you might be thrown into the opposite lane where hitting other cars will be inevitable.

one more tip for parking : once you have changed the mirror alignment its not like you cant change it again: For parking if youre unsure if you will hit the pavement, just adjust both mirrors to point downwards, that way you will have a much easier time guessing where the pavement and your vehicle is. after successfully parking, readjust the mirrors to the proper position and youre good to go

Youre still going to have a blind spot even if you adjust the mirror. This has to do with the anatomy of your eyeball. You need to know this or youll never fifure it out. Its very easy to get rid of blind spots, either by getting convex mirrors or just buy a little convex stick on mirror for a couple of dollars. They stick to your regular mirror because they have a sticky back. Place it closer to the inside of the mirror (the side closer to you) so you dont block your regular mirror.

I have my driving permit for over 45 years and it ALWAYS been in good standings not one infraction in over 45 years!
The very best way to learn to drive is:
Take driving lessons when there is snow on the road if you can drive on snow and ice safety, then without snow and ice say in July, you will drive even better without snow and ice.
How can any driving school prepare you to drive in snow and ice when it is summertime?
Take driving school when it is winter I strongly suggest you do. If you do not take my advice, you'll find out why and remember my suggestion.
Using your mirrors to drive in reverse, The best way to park is not be lazy, remove your seatbelt [ permitted by law ] when backing up, turn your head look thru back window, both sides of your vehicle, glance at all your mirrors - never rely on JUST your mirrors.
Them vehicles with backup cams, I dislike them, gives a false sense of confidence, sure you see what is behind your vehicle, but I noticed people when using their backup camera's fail to check the sides and front of their vehicle, resulting in doing damage to vehicles or property. GOT EYES,, USE THEM.
When driving get the BIG PICTURE, look far in front of you, in doing so you'll see what is very close to you as well.
Always...Always look at the mirror on the driver's side before you [ the driver ] opens your door, make sure there are no bikes or a vehicle near your vehicle.
Never ever drive a vehicle saying...... I will crash I will crash I will crash
I tell you now YOU WILL CRASH
you are programming your mind to crash, so when you do crash,, you'll say... see I knew I was going to crash.
Drive with confidence, YOU CAN DO IT.
You are the perfect driver in the world
so watch out for the idiots
    Drive safe everyone
    Do not drwink and dwive

I've been doing the mirror trick for years and it's amazing how much more I can see. I really like #2 I typically drive the speed-limit but it is amazing how many people I've been with that claim you're driving slower then you really are on the highways. It's the same when you are higher off the ground in a bigger truck. People drive 80-90 mph in a 65 and but really they don't save as much time as they think they do.

Disagree with the mirror positioning. You should be able to view a slight portion of your car side. I think i'd have more faith in a portable battery charger than the high beam trick. Just a few tips from me with 30 years of experience is when approaching buses at the bus stop look underneath the bus if you can to see any pedestrians just seeing their feet moving in front of the bus ready to run.
Also hover your foot over the brake not touching when approaching junctions when your driving on the main road just in case the driver waiting at the junction pulls out on you,as not all drivers are in the right frame of mood, don't trust them an inch.
Look for pedestrians walking upto the road with head slightly down walking slightly crouched, walking in a stiff trance like walk,as these types will surely walk straight out in front of you without stopping or looking.
Most driving instructors will only teach you the basics all the rest will come with experience.

In winter the batteries have lower capacity, so you shouln't waste energy. Better heat it from outside.
Take a bottle with hot water from inside, lay the bottle on the battery. Meanwhile you can free your car from snow.
So your battery has some minutes to warm up without wasting the important energy for start.
Mostly the reason for non starting cars is freezed Diesel or Gas. Its not really freezed, its semifluid, and the pump can't get it out of the tank.

I disagree with the mirror adjustments and how you recommend not looking over your shoulder. Especially if you are on a 3 lane highway and you want to change into the middle lane from the right lane , but someone from the left lane also wants to switch into the middle lane, with your suggested mirror adjustments you will not see that other car, you need to look over your shoulder to check. If you leave ample distance in front of you, you will not be in any danger with a quick check. I have been driving like this for over 20 years with no issues and I also teach this way to all my students. I do like some other things in this video though, just not this of course.

Never even attempt to heat your battery, you can not possibly do it by turning anything in your car except ignition. And be careful if you have a diesel as they usually need to be preheated and they HAVE A SWITCH FOR IT.
A good tip is if you have diesel make sure you know how to heat it up. If it doesn't start same as with gas engine. Leave it. Extreme cold falls into category of extreme conditions as extreme heat. Most thinks are not meant to work outside there temperature range( Hence the range ).
If you do live in extreme climate conditions, deserts, high altitudes and cold environments. Ask around what people are doing to keep there cars going.
There is full explanation below way not to heat up the battery with high beams or anything else. Full Explanation is below why not to heat up the battery.

Cold battery tends to have lower performance, and if so cranking the engine will heat it far more than anything else as it can pull enough current so everything else stops working, but you HAVE to WAIT a bit between cranks since you can get this over heat your battery.
Now get this IT'S NOT THE BATTERY you cant start diesel engine without previously heating it up even if it is above zero.
So some basic physics cranking engine with 6kW and 2.5 ohm internal resistance electric for 5s starter will put enough energy into 1kg of water to heat up by 4 degrees Celsius.
Internal resistance will bi less than 2.5 ohms and you should not keep ignition on for more than 5s.
By the way 6kW drop voltage on a 12V led acid to close to 6V. Witch usually results in your radio going silent or completely turning off.
There will be some differences, as you may know some cars use 6V battery and trucks 24V or even up to 48V.
Battery has a single purpose to provide power to start your engine and keep lights on to warn other people if you have to leave it in a danger spot, like hazard lights. Also there are 3 positions on light switch OFF, ON, and in between is well where I live called position lights. You leave them on to make car visible.
Use your battery to start the engine and for making your car visible nothing else, as engine provides power for everything else.
