7 Driving Habits That Ruin Your Car and Drain Your Wallet

  • How to drive a car easily and safely? How to brake smoothly? Here are a few simple driving hacks and secrets you should know to drive your car like a pro.
Have you already been driving for many years or are you just starting to drive? This activity can be both exciting and exhausting. Of course, firstly it depends on road conditions. However, there is one more important thing to be considered while driving - the behavior of your car. The longer you own a car; the more driving habits you acquire. Unfortunately, not all of those habits are good ones. Moreover, the more experienced you become, the harder it is to break them. And very often those habits can affect the condition of your car. We decided to compile examples of unwise driving behavior.
Resting your hand on the gear stick 1:09
Refueling only when the tank is almost empty 2:13
    Frequent braking 3:04
    Ignoring suspicious sounds 4:26
Neglecting to use the hand brake 5:50
Running a cold engine at high revs 6:34
Keeping your foot on the brake while driving downhill 7:17
    - Whether you own an automatic or a manual car, a transmission that is not working correctly can cause serious problems both under the hood and out on the road. Moreover, transmissions are very complex, they have many moving parts, ignoring this bad habit can easily bring you to huge expenses for a transmission repair.
    - The dirt gets into the filters and the pump causing damage. The purpose of the latter is to get fuel from the fuel tank and deliver it according to the demand of the engine. During winter months, be sure to always leave the tank at least half-filled with fuel to avoid the formation of large amounts of condensate.
    - To avoid unpleasant accidents, remember to promptly change the brake hoses and keep your eye on the brake fluid level. Keep in mind that braking is another skill to be mastered; it takes a certain skill level to do it correctly.
    - Please use the following steps to safely move your vehicle away from the highway and to avoid the possible danger.
Firstly, pull over to a safe spot. Don’t hesitate to ask for any possible assistance because the process might not be that easy as it seems. And remember to switch on the hazard lights. If the car has completely broken down and you cannot start it, just push it to a safe place After, try to diagnose the issue.
    - To successfully park on an incline, hold the foot brake and shift into "park." Then pull the hand brake, and only then slowly release the brake. It doesn’t really matter if your car has a manual or an automatic transmission, car manufacturers recommend the use of the parking brake to immobilize any parked vehicle.
    - Most modern engines don’t need warming up. However, it is worth remembering that until the gauge indicates operating temperature one shouldn’t run the engine at more than 2,000 revs. In freezing conditions, it is advisable to keep the engine running for 1-2 minutes before pulling away.
    - The proper thing to do is to shift to a lower gear and initiate engine braking, which helps to reduce the use of normal brakes. It works by reducing the speed of the engine, which means that the speed of the vehicle reduces too. The aim is to prevent the vehicle get a too fast speed, especially while going downhill.

in addition to the #1, it's not just the early wear & tear of the brake pads and rotor disc, but since due to overheating due to friction, it might cause a temporary loss of brake due to air bubble lock in the brake fluid line near the brake caliper.

There's a difference between not running a cold engine at high revs and upchanging ridiculously early. Changing at 2k RPM you're going to come close to stalling the engine depending on the car's gearing. 3k won't do any harm.

I've heard other times about not resting your hand on the gear stick and its supposed negative affect on the transmission. I've had several manual transmission cars over 35 years and this has never been a problem or expense. Had one vehicle for 12 years even. Its wise to leave your hand on the gear shift so you can gear down quickly while braking. Especially to try to avoid a potential accident. I think this whole don't rest your hand on the gear shift is a ploy to just get into an accident easier. Because it takes time to get your hand on the gearshift and then gear down. And we all know that every second counts when trying to avoid getting in an accident. Same can be said about the whole "its better to drive with 2 hands on the wheel nonsense....
I remember when I was a 17 year old kid learning how to drive. It immediately felt unnatural to drive with 2 hands on the wheel. One arm always seemed to be in the way of the other. I still feel the same about it 35 years later. Your movement and response time are also affected. Its slower. You also have less of a turning radius while turning because one arm is in the way of the other. Not too long ago I tested something else out. With 2 hands on the wheel steering was loose and oversteery. With one hand on the wheel I had much more precise smaller movement inputs. I could control the car much better and more smoothly...
Some years ago I got into an accident. I was arguing with a dealership technician who was sitting passenger in my car. I got distracted by the argument. I ended up side swiping a car to the left of me. *However,* because I was driving with one hand on the wheel, I was able to react more quickly and pull away with greater precision without oversteering and hitting another car in the right lane. Only the left front side ended up with a small dent instead of the entire left side of the car being scraped and dented. The moral of the story is: You have way more control with one hand on the wheel. You also have a better turning radius because your other arm isn't in the way. Sometimes my hand is slightly lower left on the wheel. Or slightly higher left. But never on the direct top or bottom on the wheel. Too much play in the wheel with those hand positions. Sometimes I'll rest my right hand on the wheel in different positions. But its never in a fixed rigid position.

Uh yeah your wrong about braking. Any automatic car with abs, you're to slowly ride the brake going down hill as to not over ride the system and lock up. Feathering a car with abs will burn up the brakes quicker. Remember when you make a blanket statement like that, more people have auto not manual trans. Other than that good tips

Keeping your heel on floorboard is not possible on many vehicles nor is it necessary. I don't know anyone who brakes that way. It would likely lead to minute pressure on pedal and turn on brakes lights and cause brake heat and wear. Keep foot off the brake until you need to brake and when you do, keep foot off of floorboard.

Mechanics say to use brakes to slow and not the engine because it stresses the engine too much. You are basically asking the revolutions of the crankshaft to reverse. In my experience, if you are going down an extended steep incline, use first gear and brakes and only crawl down the hill. If not so steep, then use the brakes but let off every 5-10 seconds to let them cool.

  • Alygator
    Alygator Miesiąc temu

also equally unwise to run your tank to empty in the summer as well becuase many fuel pumps rely on being submerged in fuel to keep them cool. driving with under half a tank can cause the pumps to over heat and stop working prematurely.

I like this video. Okay to some of us all of this is common sense but for the people that are making fun of this upload: driving a car is huge, it goes far beyond what you learn in driver's education sure but please don't make fun of this video as there are a lot of people who actually will learn something from this post. To those that pointed out resting your foot on the clutch is bad, Kudos! That's a big one. Another bad habit is using your left foot on the brake in a car with an automatic transmission. I don't know how that left brain right brain thing works but I'm sure that this has got something to do with it, ha ha. I've watched people use their left foot on the brake in a vehicle with an automatic transmission for years then they have to drive a car with a clutch. This causes severe damage to the driver, LOL, oh no there's a car stopped ahead of me what do I do clutch brake clutch brake clutch brake oh no crash!

Is this video catered towards the American audience? Because judging by your accent, which is American, it sure seems like it. One problem though... A few of your tips are exclusive to manual drivers, which makes up maybe 5% of the American market. For example, when going down hill, don't break because it will overheat the brakes. Instead, use engine-breaking. Waiting, waiting, waiting. No tips for Automatic drivers. If there is no other option than just breaking for the Automatic drivers, then you could have at least said so, so we don't sit here and wait for our share of the tip.

I don't agree with #6, you should always refill the tank when it's almos completelty empty. By this method you don't make your tank all dirty and full of debris resting at bottom. So when it's summer and you are not concerned about your fuel level and it gets low, you dont end up having a malfunctioning pump.

I don't know how many times I've followed a car on twisty country roads for mile after mile and watched their brake lights come on at an average of three times a minute, and yet I've never touched my brakes until the end of the journey.
I've also seen cars on straight sections of road with nothing ahead of them and every now and again, their brakes are applied, presumably because they're going over the speed limit.
I can understand what they were doing if there was a speed camera or cop car in sight, but that's not the case and just taking their foot of the gas somehow doesn't seem to occur to them.

Someone should really make a video about the importance of changing brake fluid. Most people think they don’t need to change it if it’s clear and clean. Dark or “dirty” brake fluid is definitely an indication that it needs to be replaced. But most people don’t understand why the fluid is dark.
Basically brake fluid is hydroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Over time the moisture/water mixed into the brake’s hydraulic system begins to rust out metal parts in the system. The dark colour you see is actually rust, but that’s not even the biggest problem with it. If you brake while going downhill, the heat caused by the brake pad on rotor is transfered to the brake fluid, which has a very high boiling point. You know what doesn’t have a very high boiling point? The water in your brake system. That water boils and then you get air in the system, causing a spongy brake pedal and eventually NO BRAKE POWER!
If you haven’t replaced the fluid in the last 2 years do it today!
