  • How to drive a car easily and safely? How to brake smoothly? Here are a few simple driving hacks and secrets you should know to drive your car like a pro.
Have you already been driving for many years or are you just starting to drive? This activity can be both exciting and exhausting. Of course, firstly it depends on road conditions. However, there is one more important thing to be considered while driving - the behavior of your car. The longer you own a car; the more driving habits you acquire. Unfortunately, not all of those habits are good ones. Moreover, the more experienced you become, the harder it is to break them. And very often those habits can affect the condition of your car. We decided to compile examples of unwise driving behavior.
    TIMESTAMPS
Resting your hand on the gear stick 1:09
Refueling only when the tank is almost empty 2:13
    Frequent braking 3:04
    Ignoring suspicious sounds 4:26
Neglecting to use the hand brake 5:50
Running a cold engine at high revs 6:34
Keeping your foot on the brake while driving downhill 7:17
    SUMMARY
    - Whether you own an automatic or a manual car, a transmission that is not working correctly can cause serious problems both under the hood and out on the road. Moreover, transmissions are very complex, they have many moving parts, ignoring this bad habit can easily bring you to huge expenses for a transmission repair.
    - The dirt gets into the filters and the pump causing damage. The purpose of the latter is to get fuel from the fuel tank and deliver it according to the demand of the engine. During winter months, be sure to always leave the tank at least half-filled with fuel to avoid the formation of large amounts of condensate.
    - To avoid unpleasant accidents, remember to promptly change the brake hoses and keep your eye on the brake fluid level. Keep in mind that braking is another skill to be mastered; it takes a certain skill level to do it correctly.
    - Please use the following steps to safely move your vehicle away from the highway and to avoid the possible danger.
Firstly, pull over to a safe spot. Don’t hesitate to ask for any possible assistance because the process might not be that easy as it seems. And remember to switch on the hazard lights. If the car has completely broken down and you cannot start it, just push it to a safe place After, try to diagnose the issue.
    - To successfully park on an incline, hold the foot brake and shift into "park." Then pull the hand brake, and only then slowly release the brake. It doesn’t really matter if your car has a manual or an automatic transmission, car manufacturers recommend the use of the parking brake to immobilize any parked vehicle.
    - Most modern engines don’t need warming up. However, it is worth remembering that until the gauge indicates operating temperature one shouldn’t run the engine at more than 2,000 revs. In freezing conditions, it is advisable to keep the engine running for 1-2 minutes before pulling away.
    - The proper thing to do is to shift to a lower gear and initiate engine braking, which helps to reduce the use of normal brakes. It works by reducing the speed of the engine, which means that the speed of the vehicle reduces too. The aim is to prevent the vehicle get a too fast speed, especially while going downhill.

When you park, put the car into Neutral, and then apply the hand/emerg brake to ensure that the car will not roll, and THEN put the auto in P or the manual in either first or reverse (best because of the high gear ratio). When you get into your car, start it, then apply the foot break, put the car into gear, and then undo the hand/emerg brake, AND if you have a heavy spring recoil on your emergency brake, use your foot to ease the brake out; do not let it SLAM open.
Or do what you want, and enjoy the repair bills. :D
Also, never downshift to the light, when the tranny speed and engine rpm are equal, you may safely and easily pull your car out of gear. Use the brakes to stop, not the clutch pad. Or again, enjoy your $$$ going out the window. :D

So engines don't need to warm up, but it's bad to run a cold engine over 2000 rpm. So i guess that means go 5 miles a hour till the engine is warm. And what if we drive an automatic car? How are we supposed to downshift and let the transmission slow us down? Real "bright side" thinking there.

I got 3. 1,If you know you got a old raggedy car and you have no idea when it's going to conk out on you, keep your behind in the right-hand lane. 2, if you're low on gas but still trying to make it to your favorite spot, if you do this often enough, you will fail at least once. Is this happens you should always be searching for the open lane, way out, escape, and or the best way to get out of everyone's way until you can fix your problem. 3, If the car conks out, don't always immediately think, "hit the brake."; momentum may coast you either to the nearest filling station or a safer spot to leave the car. Better yours, or my, broke down car coast into the grass, instead of remaining in lanes of traffic.

Downshifting is one the best reasons to drive a manual. People who are saying you should use your brakes instead of downshifting don't know how to drive their car. You almost always use your brakes when downshifting at the same time. This is what your car is designed to do. Sorry, you're missing the whole point of a manual transmission. Of course, there are times when you don't need to downshift like when you have plenty of time to come to a complete stop, but it is much safer to have the car in a gear that matches it's engine speed (this way you can accelerate quickly to avoid trouble.). When done correctly, downshifting will not ruin your car's transmission.

RESTING YOUR HAND ON THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB.
OK, most manual transmission cars, like my own are designed in such a way, where it's instinctive, if not just plain comfortable to rest your hand on the knob. 99% of my driving time is sent like that. I know better than to put undue pressure on the gear-shift knob. Most people, like the ones that didn't have the benefit of birth control, don't know..

I've heard other times about not resting your hand on the gear stick and its supposed negative affect on the transmission. I've had several manual transmission cars over 35 years and this has never been a problem or expense. Had one vehicle for 12 years even. Its wise to leave your hand on the gear shift so you can gear down quickly while braking. Especially to try to avoid a potential accident. I think this whole don't rest your hand on the gear shift is a ploy to just get into an accident easier. Because it takes time to get your hand on the gearshift and then gear down. And we all know that every second counts when trying to avoid getting in an accident. Same can be said about the whole "its better to drive with 2 hands on the wheel nonsense....
I remember when I was a 17 year old kid learning how to drive. It immediately felt unnatural to drive with 2 hands on the wheel. One arm always seemed to be in the way of the other. I still feel the same about it 35 years later. Your movement and response time are also affected. Its slower. You also have less of a turning radius while turning because one arm is in the way of the other. Not too long ago I tested something else out. With 2 hands on the wheel steering was loose and oversteery. With one hand on the wheel I had much more precise smaller movement inputs. I could control the car much better and more smoothly...
Some years ago I got into an accident. I was arguing with a dealership technician who was sitting passenger in my car. I got distracted by the argument. I ended up side swiping a car to the left of me. *However,* because I was driving with one hand on the wheel, I was able to react more quickly and pull away with greater precision without oversteering and hitting another car in the right lane. Only the left front side ended up with a small dent instead of the entire left side of the car being scraped and dented. The moral of the story is: You have way more control with one hand on the wheel. You also have a better turning radius because your other arm isn't in the way. Sometimes my hand is slightly lower left on the wheel. Or slightly higher left. But never on the direct top or bottom on the wheel. Too much play in the wheel with those hand positions. Sometimes I'll rest my right hand on the wheel in different positions. But its never in a fixed rigid position.

Uh yeah your wrong about braking. Any automatic car with abs, you're to slowly ride the brake going down hill as to not over ride the system and lock up. Feathering a car with abs will burn up the brakes quicker. Remember when you make a blanket statement like that, more people have auto not manual trans. Other than that good tips

Keeping your heel on floorboard is not possible on many vehicles nor is it necessary. I don't know anyone who brakes that way. It would likely lead to minute pressure on pedal and turn on brakes lights and cause brake heat and wear. Keep foot off the brake until you need to brake and when you do, keep foot off of floorboard.

Mechanics say to use brakes to slow and not the engine because it stresses the engine too much. You are basically asking the revolutions of the crankshaft to reverse. In my experience, if you are going down an extended steep incline, use first gear and brakes and only crawl down the hill. If not so steep, then use the brakes but let off every 5-10 seconds to let them cool.

  • Alygator

also equally unwise to run your tank to empty in the summer as well becuase many fuel pumps rely on being submerged in fuel to keep them cool. driving with under half a tank can cause the pumps to over heat and stop working prematurely.

I like this video. Okay to some of us all of this is common sense but for the people that are making fun of this upload: driving a car is huge, it goes far beyond what you learn in driver's education sure but please don't make fun of this video as there are a lot of people who actually will learn something from this post. To those that pointed out resting your foot on the clutch is bad, Kudos! That's a big one. Another bad habit is using your left foot on the brake in a car with an automatic transmission. I don't know how that left brain right brain thing works but I'm sure that this has got something to do with it, ha ha. I've watched people use their left foot on the brake in a vehicle with an automatic transmission for years then they have to drive a car with a clutch. This causes severe damage to the driver, LOL, oh no there's a car stopped ahead of me what do I do clutch brake clutch brake clutch brake oh no crash!
